Stewart-Winter — Historian of Sexuality, Gender, and Politics

Timothy Stewart-Winter is a historian of sexuality, gender, and politics in modern America. His research examines LGBTQ activism and public policy, electoral and presidential politics, and the shifting public meanings of private life.

He is the author of Outed: LBJ’s Confidant and the Arrest That Transformed a Presidency and Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics. His writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Slate, and leading historical journals.

Stewart-Winter's scholarship and teaching address civil rights, the Stonewall riots, HIV/AIDS, same-sex marriage, trans history, urban politics, and the history and memory of September 11. He is a co-director of the Queer Newark Oral History Project and has contributed to museum exhibitions, documentary films, arts collaborations, and programs for K–12 teachers.
